Chapter 2
I watched as we passed through town, I saw my new school, Woodrow High was as big as the mall of America in Minnesota. I smiled as I spotted the local café shop called Hot Spot café; it spoke for its name, all I saw was teens inside the café and outside. I paused when I saw the same twins I saw earlier joining a group of teens outside of the café.
They turned their stares from the group to our truck but when the group started to go inside, the twins began following the car. Soon I turned my gaze from the stalking twins to see a small grocery store called twelfth mile but what made me kick my heels with joy was the charming old antique shop with a wanted sign out front.
I noted that the shop was called Unique Antiques, when we hit the outskirts of town, we came upon a neighborhood of grand houses but the one that got me in awe was the house on the left that was a old Victorian home colored in green and a strong orange with towers and balcony with a beautiful yard and porch.
When we got closer to the forest again, it seem we had lost sight of the stalking twins. While we drove, I took in the beauty of the forest the trees went on for miles with forest green. Breaks of the tree branches let in the deep sunlight, lighting up the forest showing its majestic qualities. My heart jumped out of my chest when I saw a large sunlit and glowing.
I jumped and squealed,” oh my god Rayne, there’s a lake here oh my god! Can we go swimming later please?”
Rayne smirked at the thought of me being a jumpy teenager rather than my emotionally tided off self. He nodded in response; I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.
I sat back down in the backseat of the truck; taking in the scenery god New Hope was beautiful. Finally arriving at the house, my jaw dropped in a dreamy haze. I looked up it was beautiful, the staircase winded up to the top, there were lamps that made the place glow like the stars. As the trees hung over the cabin like clouds into a glowing haven, the house looked to be a two-story cabin built with open windows and roomy spaces.
I squealed erupting from the car forgetting my shoes, I dashed for the door to see the wonders inside. The living room was open with a warmly feeling from the fireplace with comforting couch. The kitchen was wide with counters and cabinets soon to be filled with mother’s china, I open arched slide doors to a room for dinner parties and to make new friends. There held a window at the end of the dining room open and airy that you can see the beautiful forest garden at the side of the house.
I peeked into the first floor bedrooms, the first one stored a baby crib near the window pane above it was a umbrella of small stuffed animals like tigers, wolves, bats, cobras, and a dolphin. The queen-sized bed was fit for my mother with her favorite royal purple bed sheets and a deep brown dresser with rich details of spirals and wisteria flowers. The next room was small but roomy enough for Rayne with his work out equipment, the bed was tall and also queen sized and covered with a black comforter.
I went back to the living room to find something I missed while walking in, a spiral staircase to the second story. Following the steps to an archway of open space, the bed was large with a metal wiring bed frame with spirals upward to drapes of white silk and Christmas lights.
Next to the bed was a quote saying “IF I Lay Here Would You Lie With Me and Just Forget The World”. I smiled as I looked around the room to see another wall covered in my photos of family and friends who I left back in Italy, above it was the wording “PEOPLE CHANGE, MEMORIES DON’T”.
My bed wasn’t covered yet with any comforters but it still looked warm and safe, the dresser that sat in my room was large and colored dark sea blue with light tan drawers and one with a mirrored cabinet door. I gazed to my desk when I saw something that hung from my necklace stand shining silver, I stepped closer finding that the gleaming silver was none other than my father’s dog tags which I thought were destroyed from the fire that broke out after my mother and I escaped.
I took the tags in my shaking palm, I tried holding back the tears but the ghostly presence of my father sent my emotions into a deep spiral of grief. The rain stormed down violently making the trees shake from the strength of the storm, breaking the barriers of tears from falling thunder began crashing.
I fell to my knees, tasting the salty tears pierces my lips. I didn’t look to see that Rayne came to my side taking me tightly in his embrace; he kissed my forehead calming me down. “Oh Sweet, Sweet Soph I didn’t mean to make you sad.”
I cried in his arms and slowly came down from emotional break. “ It’s alright now Rayne, i’m okay i just was surprised from all the emotional built up i held inside for so long.”
Rayne nodded his head and kissed my forehead and we left for the truck to unpack. After I calmed down, we started unpacking the truck and settling into the house. When I finally got done with my room, I sat on the balcony feeling the cool breeze against my face.
I wandered back to my room leaving the balcony doors open and went to my grand piano to play. I sat down on the cold wooden balcony and began to play. Music was my own magic and it calmed the senses and the elements dance to the rhythm of my piano.
2am; where do I begin,
Crying off my face again.
The silent sound of loneliness
Wants to follow me to bed.
I'm a ghost of a girl that I want to be most.
I'm the shell of a girl that I used to know well.
Dancing slowly in an empty room,
Can the lonely take the place of you?
I sing myself a quiet lullaby.
Let you go and let the lonely in
To take my heart again.
Too afraid to go inside
For the pain of one more loveless night.
But the loneliness will stay with me
And hold me til I fall asleep.
I'm a ghost of a girl that I want to be most.
I'm the shell of a girl that I used to know well.
Dancing slowly in an empty room,
Can the lonely take the place of you?
I sing myself a quiet lullaby.
Let you go and let the lonely in
To take my heart again.
I was startled by the sound of clapping from beyond the balcony and I raced to the balcony to see a teenage boy staring into my room.
I cup the hem of my sleeves curiously struck by the randomness of the boy, I lean against the balcony railing tilting my head while the boy claps silent and he compliments me,” You're like an angel that only the lucky can peer upon.”
I chuckled at his flirtatious comment, shaking my head I speak,” and who might just you be?” The boy smiled stepping into the moonlit light showing a tall man with wood brown hair and cloud felt gray eyes then he answered my question,” Ryder, I am a friend of Rayne’s!”
Ryder and I were left to awkward silence till curiosity hit and I questioned.” How old are you Ryder?” he smoothed his fingers through his curly mess of a hair looking at the floor as he did it, but eventually answered the question,” I am, truly 19 years old.”
I sighed at the relief of his honesty than argued, “ What are you doing in the woods at this time of night anyway?” he chuckled at my argument over his random appearance, he stepped closer to the house speaking "Just wandering the woods its kind of a instinct thing too check the safety of my surroundings.”
Ryder interested me more than anything, he didn’t seem to mind me and my straight to the point attitude but didn’t he see the wolves from earlier, "Well then you better be careful cause we spotted some wolves earlier.”
He smirked at my outburst then slowly started retreating back into the woods telling me,” There is a lot more than wolves wandering around New Hope, you just have to open your eyes to see it’s mysteries, good night Hero.”
I was left dumbfounded by the fact that he knew that my name wasn’t really Sophia Hero Talar but Hero Talar, maybe Rayne told him because he trusted him. I don’t really know but I have a feeling I am about to
find out.
Chapter 3
I woke to the silent sounds of my wind chimes and the sound of Rayne’s voice calling for me, “ Soph Get Up now, we don’t want you being late on your first day of school now, do we?”
I groaned slithering out of my cream bed sheets, throwing my tye dye comforter to cold wood floor. I rub my eyes while I walk towards the bathroom; after a shower I was more alive and happier. It became like a therapy for me to clean away the bad in the morning to let the energy in; as I brush my tangled mess of fiery locks I smell the scent of Orange citrus from my shampoo and conditioner.
I heard a knock at the archway, turning my head to the sound of the knock. I see Ryder standing in my bedroom archway; I chuckled while I continue to brush my hair. I stood up from my stool and went to grab the ends of my towel when Ryder coughed before retreating to the first floor, as I was about reveal myself from the damp towel. “ Rayne told me to tell you to hurry up or we were going to be late.”
I nodded my head and when I was completely alone, I began getting ready for school. Stepping in front of my floor length mirror; I know that people see me as a beautiful teenage girl but all I see is a boring and lifeless treasure being torn about inside there is nothing beautiful about that.
I finished putting black eyeliner and some clear lipstick on; I started braiding my hair into a long fishtail braid finishing, I slipped on a pair of black jeggings with a pair of leg warmer socks and my brown combat boots. I pulled on a pale tank top with a hint of lace topping it with my deep blood red sweater accompanied by my nerdy square glasses and a black beanie.
I hurried down the stairs grabbing my black shoulder bag; reaching the kitchen in no time at all. My mom with her pregnant belly and all sat on living room couch with a book, a tub of ice cream, and pickle jar; Rayne was making French toast while discussing a topic with Ryder in a old language I couldn’t quite understand.
Rayne’s gaze moved from ryder to me, i took the opportunity to ask.” What are you too knuckle heads talking about?”
Rayne gave me his alpha glare that he only gave me when i was walking into something that didn't concern me.
