“Larry, this is the Bain of my existence. Bain of my existence, this is Larry.”

  “You’re so mean!”

“And yet like a kicked puppy, you just keep coming back for more.”

Larry watched the two, Kyle and the Bain of his existence, argue back and forth like grade school children and realised that he’d never seen so much life in Kyle’s eyes. Sure it was heated with anger but it was there. Kyle actually liked a human being.

The big guy turned to him and Larry’s focus centred on him. Larry was a tall guy in his own right but this guy was huge. He was also a bit goofy and his ears were a little too big for his face but he wasn’t stupid by any means. Intelligence shone in those big brown eyes for a while before good humour masked it.

“I’m Trevor.” He extended his hand, which Larry shook briefly before Trevor slid into the booth next to Kyle.

Larry was sitting across from Kyle. Because of this he was able to see when the big guy, Trevor, had entered the diner calling for Kyle.

“Kyle, I’ve got this great joke.”

Kyle turned fully to look at Trevor. It was not a friendly look. His eyes had gone a horrid green colour and just for a moment, Larry could have sworn that his tongue was black and forked. Trevor miraculously didn’t see it. Larry did and his amusement as the situation his friend found himself in grew. It was new to see Kyle loosing so much of his iron clad control. Larry looked at Trevor. He liked having this human around.

  “No you don’t.”

“What does that mean?” Trevor’s good-natured smile dissolved away.

“It means I’m sick of your jokes.”

“You always say that.” Trevor gave Kyle a hug but Larry was suspicious that it wasn’t a nice one. His suspicions were confirmed when Kyle winced in pain. It seemed that Trevor did indeed notice Kyle’s not so niceness. Larry was like this more and more. A grin split his lips.

“I always mean it too; but fine, tell your joke so I can get on with my day.”

A grin light up Trevor’s face and he cleared his throat theatrically. He let go of Kyle who rolled his eyes but Larry didn’t miss the fond but brief smile that spread across his face. Kyle really did like this human.

“So, a time traveller walks into a diner…”

Kyle tuned Trevor out after that part. Larry could tell because Kyle had turned to look out the window. Larry pretended to listen. He could tell that this would be the start of a beautiful, dysfunctional albeit amusing friendship. Larry smiled. He watched in amusement as a light film began to cover Kyle’s eyes.

Trevor was gesturing in wild and nonsensical motions. A beautiful friendship indeed.

  The end.
