Page 3 of Milkmoney

  LOVE

Oysterboy and Starfishgirl scramble down the slope from the pink hotel, down to the white dazzle of sand on the beach.

Reaching the bottom, they fall into each other’s' arms, laughing. At the same instant, they both realize; this is the perfect moment, a bright page in their book of memories that will never fade.

  ...

Old and dying, Oysterboy takes her wrinkled hand. "Remember that day?” he whispers. She smiles. "It’s been a good life, Oysterboy. I love you." And once again, they think the same thought: "I know what heaven is like." "I'll be with you again soon", she says. And he knows she will.

  EPITAPH

"Eaten by small dogs" was what she wanted on her tombstone

but her only tombstone is the Rock River

I write her epitaph on a Burger King wrapper,

  crumble and throw it in.
