Endnote; Why ‘Soccer’ and not ‘Football’?

Why does this book use the title of ‘soccer’ and not the universally accepted name of ‘football’? Isn’t soccer a much older name that has been replaced by the universal name ‘Football’?

The answer to the last question is ‘Yes’ and things will continue to change. Here in Australia we are in a transition stage between the names, although not all interested parties may agree.

Try an internet search with the key word ‘soccer’ and you will invariably find any number of football clubs, leagues, and interest groups across the world. Broadcast times for matches on television or a header at the top of a newspaper article may use the title ‘Soccer’ in preference to ‘Football’ so as to perhaps not confuse it with other codes of football.

Yes, things will change. The game will be called ‘football’ and only ‘football’ in years to come. However, we are not there yet as an Australian society. Some searches tend to reveal the same is true in other countries like the USA. So, we play soccer but we all know that it has the highest participation rate and fan base of any sport in the world; the sport we know and love as football to all, is also soccer to some.
