How they could dismiss the bloody scene before them was beyond Lena’s understanding. And because of that she felt old enough to be their mother all of a sudden; said simply, “Sh-h-h…”
She shook her head and smiled at her brother then wondered, How long ‘til tomorrow, anyway?
She lifted the pendant watch and in her eagerness to press the stem she easily overlooked its scratched case and tiny peripheral dents.
No one, however, could overlook its cracked crystal.
