“I feel kind of sorry for Laura, though,” Bess said. “She was a victim in all of this.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t shed too many tears,” Cam remarked. “She did drug the horses, after all, and before Lieutenant Masterson took her away, she made sure I knew she was interested in me only because U.J. left me the horses. All she ever wanted was money!”
There was silence at the table as they considered everything that had happened.
Bess exhaled heavily. “I’m just glad it’s all over. I don’t want to have to think about anything more except having fun now. We’ve got one last night in Louisville. Let’s make the most of it!”
Cam, Thea, Walt, and Nancy agreed heartily.
“But first I’ve got to call my father,” said Nancy. “I know he’s dying to hear all the details about the race.”
Bess dimpled. “When he sent you down here he had no idea you’d run straight into a mystery.”
“That’s right. He was just trying to help me get over my boredom.” Nancy laughed at the irony of it all. “And it worked! I’ve never been so unbored in my life. The Kentucky Derby is the greatest two minutes in sports—and a whole lot more!”
