Epilogue

  Tristan

  Black wolf

I stand on the edge of a cliff face, looking across the wilderness with leagues of fir trees in all directions. My mind lost with all that had happened; waking up in a daze, seeing the girl, glowing with white wings coming from her shoulders and her eyes alive with love for my brother—Ethan. She had healed him as though it was nothing, and those lion’s jumping in the way. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had no idea what was going on. I was thrilled to see Ethan. He was there. I saw him the day before … with that girl, at the house. Told him I was heading off on my own. Or at least I think I did, didn’t I?

My head throbbed, the pain from some kind of a fall. I ran for a long time around the town and beyond. Now I stand looking at it. I didn’t understand. My mind was clouded as I shook my head and jumped the twenty feet, landing on the balls of my feet with a spring in my step. At the centre of my mind, a nagging thought bugged me, trying to remember that night.

  The Master.

Yes, I remember seeing him. Stupid fool. Like I thought. Gone and got himself in a slumber. He was useless. He spoke to me—yes, I remember that. He bit me. Nasty bite that. Should never have gotten that close to him. Why did I follow Ethan and his girl, the quiet one. She had spoken to him, yes; I remember he would answer her. How strange that I couldn’t get a read on her. But she did call me the Nice One. Interesting. I wasn’t nice—ever. And why is everything so messed up?

  “Tristan?”

I turned and saw Mavrick, dark leathers, long greasy hair tied to match a goatee that was a few inches too long. He walked slowly towards me.

Oh, great, and I thought I had gotten rid of this guy. Should have taken Ethan’s advice last time and left when I could.

“Oh, it’s good to see you’re still alive … I’ve been tracking your scent for a while now, come on; we’re out of this crap town.”

“Mavrick, what happened?” I asked, hesitant on heading off.

  “What?”

  “What happened in the cave?”

“Oh, that angel knocked you good; you were fighting Ethan, and getting a good nip at him too. Think you were about a beat away from ripping his throat out. Of course you had already staked him so he was pretty weak; I’ll have to admit, didn’t think you were still angry with him. So you ready to go. The gangs headed to the big city, they don’t like this small town; too many eyes here.”

I couldn’t show shock with what I heard. Staked Ethan? Bit him? Nearly took his throat out?

“How many of us got away?”

“Five, but I ain’t complaining. Most of the ones that got dusted weren’t my favourites; think I was close to killing them myself.”

“What about the girls—the one that didn’t talk to us—Stacy?”

“The flesher?” Mavrick held wonder for the tenth of a second but not bothered.

“Yeah, have you still got them?”

“Nah, stupid lion’s got them. Saved them all and gave them a memory wipe. Allan ran like a girl. Bit annoyed the lions didn’t get him.”

I stared at Mavrick, not sure what to say. I stayed calm, blocking him from my thoughts. It wouldn’t matter anyway. Regret surfaced and sadness too. I’d hurt Ethan? Last time we hung together, I almost killed him. But I didn’t want that. He is my big brother, even if he doesn’t remember. Remembering the past thirty years that we hung out, he treated me like his brother once. I believed he remembered me … He didn’t. But to think I had staked him, to hurt him like that. I couldn’t believe I would do that. How could I be so cruel?

“Well, we’re down on the road if you’re coming,” said Mavrick turning away. I watched as he took several steps. I better not leave him on bad terms, rogue Dundine lore knows what he would send to me.

“Mav?” I was hesitant. “I think I might head off on my own way for awhile.”

He turned by a fraction. “Yeah, I figured you’d say that, it’s been eating at you since we picked up that flesher.”

I nodded, but it was true, that girl, Stacy; she was so sweet, so pretty. I felt for her in a way I hadn’t felt for another human. I had few vampire ladies in my past; this was different, strange, but I felt like I needed to check on her.

“So you want your bike?” asked Mav.

“Yeah, just leave it in the bush by the road, tell the guys. Well, tell them if they give you too much crap, I’ll come find em.”

“Well, no worries, it’s been a fun forty years or more, on and off. So, I guess, see ya on the next spin.”

“Yeah, sure, see ya on the next spin.”

A wisp of air and he was no more.

I sighed heavily. Letting the gang go like that was easier than I thought. Now I just had to find out what I was doing. I needed to get out on my own, away from a coven of blood thirsty thieves, and now that I was, the options were suddenly daunting.

I let the ripple of form take shape. This time I chose wings. Flight and cover was what I needed. I soared high over the tree line heading towards the town.

Yes, I could hide here like this. It was harder for others to find me in this form, and it was easy to blend in as part of the wildlife.

First stop. To check that my stupid older brother was okay, then; to find Stacy.
