Posthumously I would like to thank my father, whose nickname was Lucky, for sharing his boyhood adventures. He was full of amusing stories. Some were true, some made up. When I was a little girl, he had me enthralled.
Mowbray Brothers combines two of my favourites: the secret fishing hole inside the bathing enclosure of the Mowbray Park baths, and the swimming race across a shark-infested river.
Thank you to Brisbane City Council, who awarded me a prize in the One Book Many Brisbanes competition for this short story.
Also posthumously, thanks to my mentor for this project, Rosie Fitzgibbon.
So knowledgeable, so patient, so inspiring.
To Sam, many thanks for putting up with me during the long silent hours of self-imposed solitary confinement in my office.
To Elise and Adam, thanks for listening and giving me encouragement.
And thanks to Rosetta Lake Mills for a delightful cover design.

Baby Farm
Published 2014
Contemporary fiction
Cozy crime mystery novel
Inspired by an Australian Senate enquiry into forced adoptions in the 1970s, contemporary human fertility interventions and commercial surrogacy.
How much is a baby worth?
Politician Vann Willis is about to achieve her lifelong goal: justice for victims of forced adoptions and illegal surrogacy. Her Commission of Inquiry stirs deep emotions and exposes an underbelly of crime that specialises in baby trafficking.
When a blast rips through Vann's electoral office, she forms an unlikely partnership with journalist Seth VerBeek. Together they set out to find the truth.
Their search leads them to a gothic homestead called Maidenhead, a one-time country retreat for pregnant teenagers. These days, the owners of the property are immersed in a far more sinister enterprise that has international implications.
Every discovery brings fresh challenges. Dark secrets are revealed; Vann's life is threatened; one relationship ends while romance blossoms.
At the heart of it all is the baby farm.
Praise from readers:
From the darkly compelling cover design, to the rich multi-layered story itself, I loved this novel from start to finish. N.D.
I couldn’t wait to read Baby Farm and just had to dig in. I loved it. What a fabulous read. I couldn’t put it down and was sorry when the story was all over! Can’t wait for your next book. J.L.
Wow, I so loved Baby Farm and did not want it to finish. It resonated with me on so many levels but principally from having grown up in that 1970’s era. P.S.
What better way to spend a rainy weekend than to read Baby Farm! The only problem? I’m not getting anything else done because I can’t put it down. Congratulations on this wonderful book. A.G.
I’m so disappointed I finished Baby Farm today! I wanted it to continue on. I really enjoyed the whole story. Please let me know when the next novel is out. R.F.
