They played around with middle names for a while, shooting down Rose, because it reminded them of, well, Rose, and tossing out a half dozen others as well—Grace, Skye, Isabella, Storm, Snow, Ivy, Holly and so on.
“Angel Noelle.” The name popped into Joe’s head. “She was conceived around Christmas.”
“Angel Noelle Moffat,” Rain said, testing it.
They agreed to sit on it for a few days. There was no rush, after all.
“Where did you come up with Lark’s name?” Joe had never asked.
“She made me think of a hungry baby bird—tiny, helpless, always wanting to eat. Today was so much easier than Lark’s birth. Thank you for helping me through this. I couldn’t have faced it without you.”
He bent down, kissed Rain’s temple. “I wish I could have done more.”
Now that he’d witnessed a birth and been beside her through an entire pregnancy, it left Joe feeling sick to think of her at age sixteen giving birth alone in a goddamned vehicle. If that bastard ever set foot in the pub again…
“What are you feeling?” Rain asked. “You look upset.”
Joe took a breath, let it go. “No. Not at all. I feel like I’m just starting my life. It’s like the past forty-eight years have been lived in black and white, and now everything has become color. Loving you has changed everything. How do I feel? I feel happy.”
Yes, times certainly had changed.
