The three French frigates in Jason’s telescope made no effort to alter course in preparation to engage his oncoming fleet. Instead, seemingly oblivious to the threat from their starboard side, the French vessels maintained their course towards the entrance to Montuga harbour.

‘They can’t have any starboard lookouts, Captain,’ Lieutenant Savage reported.

‘Yes, their lookouts must all be on the port side watching the reaction to their imminent arrival in the harbour,’ Jason replied, as his brow furrowed. ‘They must think that an attack on a defenceless harbour located on their port side, renders starboard lookouts unnecessary.’

‘Maybe they saw us but think we are a convoy of merchant vessels,’ Savage replied.

‘Possible. But I suspect that we are dealing with new, inexperienced Captains,’ Jason replied. He glanced at the Lieutenant. ‘If they do turn to engage us, then order the standard to be raised at once. If not, wait until they enter the harbour before doing so.’

  ‘Very good, Captain.’

The French ships did not alter course. As they drew nearer to the harbour entrance Jason spoke again.

  ‘Proceed to general quarters, Lieutenant.’

‘Proceed to general quarters!’ There was a flurry of activity as everyone on the Phoenix deployed to their battle stations. Dozens of marines on the foredeck donned the red jackets they had recently been issued. The sound of sliding slats drifted up from the port and starboard sides of the hull as the brand new gun ports opened.
