Leyton sat in a dark corner of the bar and scanned each person as they entered. The noise level inside the bar grated on her sensitive nerves. Leaning her head back against the wall, she prayed for a quick end to this assignment. It just wasn't fair that she had to basically live in servitude for her father's sins. He should be the one paying the price for his sins, but he had been allowed to return to heaven's glory.
Her thoughts came to a crashing halt as her target entered the bar. No one said anything about the target being a female, but the low vibes of her soul confirmed that she was indeed the demon that had been slaughtering the homeless in the area. Leyton had no objections to taking out a female demon. It was just unusual for a female demon to be out slaughtering the innocent to collect the souls that fed the covens of demons.
The female demon walked up to the bar and gave a sweet innocent smile to the bartender. He took her request and concocted her alcoholic drink. It was clear that she knew the bartender. She continued to watch the female demon as the demon laughed at something the bartender said. Then, they both slanted a glance towards Leyton. She didn't bother hiding or even covering up who and what she was with a glamour. She simply tilted her head in acknowledgement of the attention they paid her.
The red headed demon took her glass and walked over to Leyton's table. Leyton kicked out a chair for the female demon. The female demon took the seat and looked over at Leyton.
"Leyton the famous demon hunter, I presume."
Leyton replied rather dryly, "You know it. And what demon is it that graces me with her presence?"
"Chrissy."
"That's a nice cutesy name for a demon."
Chrissy leaned her head back and laughed at the remark. Each one finished sipping their drinks in silence. When their drinks were at an end, it brought their truce to an end as well. Chrissy stood up, tipped an imaginary hat and left the bar. Leyton knew there was no need to follow Chrissy because she went up in a poof of dark smoke once she was out of the public's eye. With her target confirmed, Leyton stood up and left the seedy club.
She looked up at the sky towards the heavens. It would have been nice to have been born in heaven to a set of angel parents. However, that was not her reality. She had been born to a human mother and an angel father who had long been gone back to his place in the heavens. Her father had been one of the blessed angels that was granted redemption after the fall, and he had returned to his Father's side. She the birth child of an impure union was forever cursed to walk the path of a hunter.
She like the demon she just met was a rarity. She knew of no other half-child females that were cursed with immortality to forever hunt demons with no end. All other half-childs that she had met were men, and most of those men had found human mates that they were compatible with. Half-child females could not mate with a human, and they were unable to join with their equal male counterpart. The chances were unlikely that a mate would be created for one lone female. She was after all through no fault of her own just as cursed as her father was, when he chose to fall from the sky and mate with a daughter of man.
As she left the bar, she chose to walk down the shadowed sidewalk. The air would give her a chance to break free from earthly ties and just feel the freedom of the night. She had identified and met her target. And their clash would come soon enough. Leyton reached her apartment building and walked around the back. Blurring the shadows and hiding her small frame, she quickly scaled the apartment building like she had wings on her back.
Reaching the top level, she dropped into the chair on top of the building. The top floor and its rooftop garden was all hers. She spent many nights staring at the sky. Some nights she marvelled at the beauty of the night sky. And some nights she watched it for a sign that there really was an intelligent being that cared about what happened to the ones like her. She knew he cared about the humans, but she had her doubts that he gave a thought to the half-childs that served out their father's sentence for the biggest betrayal of all.
She went to sleep with those thoughts in her mind. When the faint glow of morning rays begin to break through the night sky, she entered the door to her apartment. She removed her jacket and carelessly dropped it onto the table. It was time for her to get some rest because when night fell, it would be time to hunt her demon.
The setting of the sun woke up her internal alarm clock. Like all half-childs, she was predominantly a night being. It was the time when the demons that hunted souls were doing their thing. She didn't bother with a bath but opted for the faster solution and took a shower. Throwing on her jeans, a white tank, and her black leather jacket, she strapped on her daggers that were kept hidden beneath her jacket. These daggers were blessed in an ancient ceremony that made them effective against demons.
She headed back towards the bar from the previous night. She knew that Chrissy would be in the vicinity of the bar. As she walked, she began to feel a vibrational field unlike any other. It was an indication of a demon nearby. However, there was something off about it. She felt the energy surround her own vibrational patterns. She was nervous for the first time in her life. This was something she had not been prepared for. She got so caught up in trying to figure out this new element that she almost missed Chrissy's vibrational energy.
Stopping in mid-stride, she turned and walked down the dark alley. Knowing she was in for a fight, she pushed the other vibrational energy into the background. It was time to do what she had been born to do. Babies were supposed to be born to be loved, but she had been born to allow her father to seek redemption and return to his former glory.
She spotted Chrissy doing what Chrissy was created to do. Chrissy ate up the soul of the homeless man and dropped his ashes into a pile of trash. Chrissy turned to Leyton and smiled like the cat that just got fed the biggest portion of the tuna. Chrissy wiped her mouth and used her hand to motion Leyton forward. It was time for a battle that had been building for days.
Leyton said her prayers, took out her daggers, and twirled them in her hands. The two ran towards each other at a speed that the human eye would be unable to detect. Chrissy flipped out of the way and slammed her fist into Leyton's throat. Leyton gasped and was stunned into
inaction for the briefest of moments. Bending slightly, she did not lose her footing. She turned and swung her arms around. The daggers turned in and sliced through the clothing of the demon. Tiny red lines of blood welled up and like all wounds from the daggers, the demons flesh begin to dissolve and fall in pieces to the pavement. Chrissy was shocked. She didn't realize that she never stood a chance against a seasoned hunter like Leyton.
Leyton signed and wiped the daggers clean of demon blood and reholstered them as if they were guns. She noticed that odd vibrational energy once again. She immediately pulled the daggers back out and scanned the area. And like a switch that had turned off, it stopped. Leyton wasn't quite sure what to make of it.
She returned to her apartment and set the safeguards. She didn't usual set up safeguards. It wasn't necessary. She was one bad ass female hunter. However, the odd vibrations she had been picking up worried her.
She showered once again, even though she didn't even break a sweat. But she always felt unclean after dispatching a demon. She walked into her bedroom and hopped into her soft plush bed. She switched on the television and fell asleep before the news was over.
She would have come up out of the bed fighting had she known she wasn't alone in her bedroom. He smiled down at the blonde haired beauty who fought just as well as any man
