  Chapter 7

  Epilogue

After a week of traveling through Vermont to reach the border, they were on the main highway in a red buick and could see the Canadian douane in the distance, only that wasn't their plan. They took a side road called Perry Mills and drove on for a couple minutes. They ditched the cars in a forested area and continued on foot. They passed a senior couple taking a walk, and continued on, picking up their pace. Christina was going to have a future. She would continue on without him if they were caught, thats what they agreed on and Robert hoped that she kept her promise.

They stopped when they say the line that was free of forestry and that seemed to extend infinitely in both directions. He hugged the girl and took the first step across the line when they heard cries from behind them. He grabbed the girl and pushed her in front of him while turning back to find the source of the screams. Two border patrol guards were running quickly towards them while waving their arms wildly. He pushed the girl away, she tumbled and picked herself up while still staring at Robert, her eyes wide open. Stupid girl he though, and screamed at the top of his lungs for her to run away. She finally began to move, and he felt rough arms grab him from behind.

The woman he had seen in the elevator that recognized Christina testified against him. The letter was used as evidence, and he was convicted of aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to fifteen years in prison.

Border patrol couldn't find Christina, and she was never to be heard of again, under her given name that is.

  Brooklyn bridge

'Depressed people will drive 20 miles, bypassing the Manhattan and the Williamsburg, just to get to the Brooklyn Bridge,'' said Gary Gorman, who helped rescue 35 potential suicides in his 12 years with the Emergency Services Unit of the New York Police Department. ''Some lives have probably been saved because people had more time to think about what they were doing while they were stuck in traffic.'

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the bridge, would not release information on the number of people who have jumped from the span, saying it's impossible to determine the exact count.
