that all the birds and animals in the vicinity fled.

She looked at me and chanted a few words. Then she lifted her wand, ready to cast a spell on me. I knew this was it. I was going to be a hyena for the rest of my life. But the next thing I knew, I was in the air! Had she made me into a vulture too? I opened my eyes to see what was happening. I was still a human and Donna was carrying me in her talons. She had saved me from the witch’s spell.

The witch was still trying to place a spell on me. Streaks of lightning came out of her wand, but all of them missed me as we flew away.

Donna carried me far away. Soon we were out of the cursed forest and we were over a big body of water. We were going towards a new forest. It looked like we would be there in minutes. Donna was flying faster than I had ever seen any bird fly.

Suddenly she began to lose her grip of me. Her talons hurt my arm. She asked me if I could swim and I answered, “Yes.”

She let go of me and I fell into the water. I started swimming while she flew towards the new forest. She perched on the bank while I continued to swim. After a few minutes, I reached the bank, too. I got up and thanked her. Now was I free?

Both of us then stared across at the cursed forest we had just escaped from. It looked really beautiful as it glowed in the setting sun. Then a dark thought crossed my mind.

“Can witches fly?” I asked her.

  “I don’t know,” she shrugged.

We both stared uneasily into the Land of the Cursed thinking desperately of ways to get further away from there, because until we did, we would never be really free.
