‘You’re so good with Titus. It’s the same thing, only you have to be a little more careful when the baby’s tiny.’ She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him hard. ‘I’m so excited! Tell me you’re excited too! You are, aren’t you?’
He adored her full steam ahead persona, the one that assumed the world shared her enthusiasm. ‘I’m getting more excited by the minute,’ he said, only half teasing. The thought of Nicole having his baby was like staring out the window and suddenly seeing a new world: the sun warmer, the grass greener, the sky bluer. His child would be loved unconditionally; he’d make sure of it. ‘I’ll try to be a good father,’ he said, quietly.
Immune to his reservations, she spoke with jubilation. ‘You’re going to be just perfect!’ Then she laughed, a little breathless sound. ‘May I announce the baby at the wedding reception? Say you don’t mind,’ she added without waiting for his answer. ‘I’m just over the moon happy and I want everyone to share in our joy.’
He smiled. ‘I don’t mind. Say the word and we’ll have fireworks to celebrate.’
‘Really?’ she said, her eyes huge. ‘Can you do that in the city?’
She took such pleasure in life; she’d even taken charge of her fear and had his baby. She loved him and for that he’d give her the world. Fireworks were nothing. Short notice if he needed permits for tomorrow, but make a few calls – the mayor of Paris, the president of France if necessary. ‘If you want fireworks, Pussycat,’ he said, calmly, ‘piece of cake. I’ll arrange it.’
