She closed her eyes as the warmth spread throughout her body, heating her tired form like freshly dried laundry on a cold night, or a hot tub in the winter. She closed her eyes as it infused her – and a voice sounded in her head.
Thank you, my lady.
Minerva raised her head and opened her eyes as the unicorn elder did the same, lifting his horn from where it had gently touched her forehead. Their gazes met once more, steady and sure and filled with a trust that had not existed in countless centuries. All around them, the unicorns moved forward. They glanced at one another. Their horns crossed in tender gestures of friendship, of respite, and of soul-deep solace.
It was the most beautiful thing Minerva had ever seen.
“You’re welcome,” she whispered. It was the least I could do.
Warm, strong arms slid around her from behind, and Minerva sank back against the king’s solid chest where he’d come to kneel behind her.
He held her close and bent to whisper in her ear. “As usual, you amaze me, Moonbeam.” His hug tightened, and he pressed his lips tenderly, lovingly to the side of her neck.
Minerva smiled. It was an easy, tired smile that came with the knowledge that something in the world had at long last gone right. And it was because of her. “Get used to it,” she told the king before she turned in his arms and kissed him back.
