Page 30 of Mr. Darcy's Letter

Jane protested, “That was a month ago, Lizzy.”

“It was a very hearty breakfast! Although truth to tell, I could not touch a bite of it.”

Bingley rose to his feet, lifting his wineglass. “I would like to propose a toast. To good friends and family, may they continue to increase in number!”

The toast was drunk. Darcy, rather than returning to his seat, crossed to stand behind Elizabeth’s chair, his hand lightly resting on her shoulder. He still had moments when he could barely believe she was his wife.

He bent over and whispered in her ear, “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

He felt a frisson run through her at his words.

“Is that so?” Elizabeth said, in a low voice just for him.

“Indeed it is true, Mrs. Darcy. But if you have any doubts, I will be happy to elaborate on the topic later tonight.”

She laid her hand atop his and gave him a luminous smile. “I will hold you to that,” she said.

  About the Author

Abigail Reynolds has spent the last fifty years asking herself what she wants to be when she grows up. This month she is a writer, a mother and a physician in a part-time private practice. Next month is anybody’s guess.

Originally from upstate New York, she studied Russian, theater, and marine biology before deciding to attend medical school, a choice which allowed her to avoid any decisions at all for four years.

She began writing Pride & Prejudice variations in 2001 to spend more time with her very favorite characters.

Encouragement from fellow Austen fans convinced her to continue asking ‘What if…?’, which led to seven other Pemberley Variations and two modern novels set on Cape Cod. Her most recent releases are WHAT

WOULD MR. DARCY DO?, A PEMBERLEY MEDLEY, and MORNING LIGHT. She is currently at work on some book or other, and will let the world know if she ever figures out what it is. A lifetime member of JASNA, she lives in Wisconsin with her husband, two teenaged children, and a menagerie of pets.
