She smiles, offering a little wave. “Good to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you.”

I let out a groan at her words. I can only imagine what they’ve told her about me. “Whatever they said, don’t believe them,” I say. “These guys are the best liars I’ve ever met.”

She laughs, a sweet little Tinkerbell laugh. “It was all good. I swear.”

The guys laugh, making their way over to the barbeque. Jason hands me a beer, before joining them. They joke around, laughing and carrying on like a bunch of teenagers, while Piper and I sit on the deck.

She doesn’t talk much, just watches.

I get lost in my own head, mulling over what to do about school. I never got around to registering for classes, but I want to. Maybe for the winter semester.

We eat and drink and laugh, and again, I find myself thinking how good it is to be home. After stuffing ourselves, Vance pulls out his guitar. Turns out, he really wasn’t lying. He can play.

  And he’s good.

  Really good.

“Oh my God,” Piper whispers, setting her beer down. She jumps up from her chair and makes quick work of crossing over to where Vance sits, guitar in his lap.

He looks up at her, a big shit-eating grin spread on his lips. “Hey, Piper.”

“Play it again,” she blurts. “That was amazing. Please, play it again.”

I nudge Jason in the ribs, and look up at him, confused. “What’s her story?”

He grins, winking at me. “She’s a new case.”

I look at her, at Vance, at both of them, and then I laugh.

It looks like a little more than a new case to me.
