Additional thanks, as well, to C. Robert Cargill, for letting me share some of his research on the Fae, and for numerous brainstorming sessions.

And speaking of research… A great deal of it went into this book, much of which was performed online. But I need to single out a few particular books that proved absolutely invaluable to me in getting many of the details right. These are, specifically, A Travel Guide to Al Capone’s Chicago, by Diane Yancey (Lucent) and The Outfit, by Gus Russo (Bloomsbury).

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ARI MARMELL would love to tell you all about the various esoteric jobs he held and the wacky adventures he had on the way to becoming an author, since that’s what other authors seem to do in these sections. Unfortunately, he doesn’t actually have any. In point of fact, Ari decided while at the University of Houston that he wanted to be a writer, graduated with a Creative Writing degree, and—after holding down a couple of very mundane jobs—broke into freelance writing for roleplaying games. His published novels include The Conqueror’s Shadow and The Warlord’s Legacy (Del Rey/Spectra), The Goblin Corps and the Widdershins Adventure series (Pyr), and Agents of Artifice (Wizards of the Coast), as well as numerous short stories.

Ari currently lives in an apartment that’s almost as cluttered as his subconscious, which he shares (the apartment, not the subconscious, though sometimes it seems like it) with his wife, George, and a cat who really, really thinks it’s dinner time. He is trying to get used to speaking about himself in the third person, but still finds it really, really weird.

  A MICK OBERON JOB

  ARI MARMELL

The Spear of Lugh, one of the four Kingly Hallows of Ireland—also known as the four treasures of the Tuatha Dé Danann—is in Chicago. And everyone, everyone, wants it, for it is said that he who carries the spear into battle cannot be defeated.

Among those who seek it are an agent of the infamous and legendary Wild Hunt; a mobster who knows far more about these sorts of things than he should; and of course both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. The Unseelie are the last people Mick Oberon would want getting hold of the spear—which is a real problem, since he currently owes them a huge favor…
