Page 22 of Smolder

And now the day had finally arrived, the day we would make it legal, the day she would become mine completely. We were pushing this wedding pretty close to her due date, but extenuating circumstances had dictated our timetable. At least we’d be married before the baby was born.

Reaching where I stood, she and her dad paused.

“Who gives this woman in Holy Matrimony?” the minister asked.

“I do,” her dad answered, passing her hand to mine.

“You’re looking hot, Doc,” I whispered in her ear as she stepped up beside me. “I can’t wait to get you out of this dress.” She blushed and elbowed me in the ribs.

Facing the minister, we both listened as he welcomed everyone and started the ceremony. I couldn’t help constantly sneaking peeks at Evie, nor could I seem to wipe this damn grin off my face.

“Do you, Evelyn Sonya McKnight, take Russ Weston to be your lawful wedded husband, from this time forward, in sickness and in health, and cleave only unto him?”

Evie turned to me, a strained look passing across her face and she shook her head. “No,” she whispered. “I can’t. Not right now.”

The guests in attendance gasped, and I stared at her in shock. “Wha . . . what?” I asked, flabbergasted.

Evie glanced between the minister and me, the grip of her hand growing ever tighter.

“Evie?” I said, totally confused and she gave a half-laugh, but it sounded pained.

“Uh, I think my water just broke,” she said hastily, shifting a foot and revealing a puddle at her feet.

Eyes widening, I turned to Dylan. “Her water just broke,” I said.

“Are you asking me for use of my kitchen?” Dylan asked with a grin, nodding toward the house.

“Hell, no. I’m asking you to go get the damn car.” Turning back to the minister, I looked him straight in the eye. “As of now, we are going to the bare bones of this ceremony. Do whatever you need to do to have us married before she gets in the car.”

Looking shocked for a moment, he straightened himself. “Do you take Russ?” he asked.

“Yes, yes,” Evie answered, signaling for him to hurry.

  “Do you, Russ, take Evelyn?”

“I do,” I replied, and Evie held her stomach as she groaned. I quickly swept her off her feet into my arms and began carrying her toward the gate where Dylan would be bringing the car.

“I now pronounce you man and wife,” the minister shouted, running behind us. “You may now kiss the bride.”

Without pausing, Evie and I shared a brief kiss and she groaned again.

“Not exactly the way I imagined it,” she said through slightly clenched teeth.

“Me, neither, but it’s legit—and that’s all I care about.”

Dylan pulled up outside the gate with the car. Jumping out, he opened the back door for us.

“One more thing,” the minister shouted from behind us.

“What?” I asked, ready to get moving to the hospital.

“You both need to sign this. Here, and here.” Slapping the wedding license on the top of the car, he passed me a pen. I quickly signed my name and gave the pen to Evie. I noticed her signature wasn’t as neat as normal, but under the circumstances, I figured that could slide.

“Thanks for coming everyone!” I shouted to the guests. “Help yourselves to the refreshments. We’re having a baby!”

Everyone burst into applause and cheers and Evie and I both smiled as I helped her into the car.

“I love you, Mrs. Weston,” I whispered, kissing her once Dylan closed the door behind us.

“I love you, too, Mr. Weston,” she added, smiling even though she was uncomfortable. “Let’s go have this baby.”

“Let’s do it,” I said, kissing her again.

  ***

The next morning, I simply watched my two sleeping girls, feeling very content with my life at the moment. Never, in a million years, would I have believed that things would’ve all ended up this way. Yes, we certainly took the long route to each other, but at least we made it.

“Excuse me, sir.” A young woman stuck her head in the door, speaking quietly so she wouldn’t wake Evie and the baby. “Would you like one of the morning papers to read while you’re here?”

“Sure,” I replied, and she brought one to me.

“Congratulations! She’s beautiful,” she said, peering into the bassinet. Lifting the card on it, she smiled. “Zoey Lyn. What a great name! Well, get some rest while you can.”

I watched as she left the room and then opened my paper, groaning at the headline that greeted me.

Hero Firefighter Ties the Knot With Doctor He Rescued and Gets a Baby, All in Same Day!

Rolling my eyes, I glanced down at the article.

Russ Weston, known to many for his daring firefighting heroics and the lives he’s saved, tied the knot yesterday, with local, renowned psychiatrist, Evelyn McKnight. The couple, whom the general public has affectionately started referring to as “Revie,” also welcomed a baby daughter, shortly after the ceremony.

Revie, I thought, shaking my head. Oh for heaven’s sake, who comes up with this crap? I’m screwed as soon as the guys at the department get a look at this.

Closing the paper, I folded my arms, choosing to stare at my pretty girls instead. Revie, I thought again. Yes, I would be catching a lot of flak over that one; but somehow, having these two beauties in my life made me feel like I could take on the entire world.

In that moment, I realized I finally had everything in my life that I envied about Cami and Dylan’s. I’d never been so happy—so content. Everything was perfect.

Well, okay, maybe not exactly perfect. I did miss my honeymoon, after all. But, as soon as Evie was able, I’d spend the rest of my life making it up to her, over and over again.

Yep, the future was looking pretty damn good.
