“So, what are we gonna do now? All of these lights are hurting my eyes. I just want to lie down in my room.” She leaned back against his shoulder when she said it, and Tony damn-neared freaked out, thinking she was going to fall out in the middle of the sidewalk as hundreds of people walked by.

“Shit, man,” he panicked. He had to strengthen his legs to hold up her weight with everything he carried in his hands.

“You should see my little room, it’s so small,” she hinted.

Okay, that’s enough. She’s not gonna make it out here anyway, Antonio told himself. He felt as if she would fall out and embarrass them at any minute. So he made a left turn at the corner of 42nd Street and spotted a taxi.

  “Taxi!” he yelled. “Right here!”

An African taxi driver looked back at them and immediately felt sympathetic. He grinned and waited for them. He even turned down a white couple who attempted to steal away the ride.

“No, they called first,” he told the faster-moving couple.

They looked back, spotted Darlene and Antonio, struggling slowly to reach the cab, and they even offered to help out.

“I’ll get that for ya’,” the man said, reaching for the yellow BEA bags.

“Awww, that’s sweet of you,” Darlene purred. “Thank you.”

“It’s all right,” the man told them.

Antonio thanked them as well. When they climbed into the taxi, he told the driver, “Columbia University in Harlem.” Then he turned to Darlene, sitting beside him with her head back. “Do you know the exact address?”

“Of course I still know it,” she told him. She called it out to the taxi driver.

Antonio let down the windows and sat back to feel the cool night breeze with her. Darlene even let her hair out of its bun to blow around in the wind.

Tony looked at her and thought, I don’t believe this. She goes right out and gets drunk on me. Now how will I be able to control myself? I hope she falls right to sleep when we get there, because if not . . .

All he could think about was ruining their long-term respect because of short-term lust. Surely he wanted to fuck her. He wanted to fuck her brains out like any other straight man would. But he also had sisters, who he listened to over and over again, telling him embarrassing stories about dissing guys who tried to move too fast on them. He was even forced to have strong words with a few of these guys. And with his mother’s insistent talk about respecting women, Toni’s assertion on dates had been totally compromised. Women had to practically beg him to take the pussy. Imagine that.

But on Darlene’s side of the cab, not only did she feel the New York breeze blowing through her soft hair, she could feel it blowing up her sans panties dress, and in between the moistened split of her thighs.

Ooooh, that feels so gooood, she told herself about everything. I feel so incredibly comfortable right now. I’ve never felt this way so early before in a relationship with a man in my life! I mean, I have been talking to him on Facebook for awhile, but still . . .

I can’t even remember how we first met on Facebook, she mused. I know we were talking about books, but that’s all I can remember. And now . . . here we are in a New York taxi ride, heading back to my hotel room. Is this really real?

She even reached out her hand to find Tony’s to confirm it. When Antonio squeezed her hand back and turned to smile at her, she became even more excited.

Wow, this is real life! she thought . . . I’m gonna fuck him so good tonight that I can’t wait. I even feel like doing it right here in the back of the taxi. He’s such a fucking sweetheart! He deserves me, he really does.
