He offered me his arm and walked me through the door into the garden.

The whole area looked like it had been blasted out, but at the top was an opening designed to let the sunshine stream through. The whole area was about twenty feet around, and the ground was covered with soil, which looked like they’d brought in.

“Wow,” I gasped, looking at the rows of bright baby greenery popping up from the dark brown ground. It seemed like a new garden, but things were growing, and soon they would be able to eat from their own garden.

“One day, we will have our own home, and our own garden,” Finn said.

I smiled wide. “Yes, we will. It’s a dream.”

“I know,” he said, “and look . . . it’s not too far from reality.”

  I nodded.

“We’d better get back to the others before they wonder where you’ve run off to. I have a feeling your parents are probably jumpy, worried that you’re going to run off.”

“You’re right, we should get back soon,” I said. As he turned to leave, I grabbed his hand and spun him around. “We’re alone and you aren’t going to kiss me?”

“I wasn’t sure if you were up for anything, since you were complaining of a headache earlier.”

“I’m always up for anything and everything you’re willing to offer, Mr. Armstrong.”

He took hold of my arms and pulled me into him, until our bodies were firmly pressed together. Then he gently placed one hand behind my neck, while the other slid down my back, holding me in place.

My eyes closed and his soft lips found mine. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him with a new passion. He was mine, for better or worse, and now I had to make sure whatever move I made, was carefully thought out with him in mind.

After our kiss, my head was spinning. “Whoa,” I breathed. “You make me dizzy.”

He laughed. “I hope that’s a good thing.”

  “It’s a very good thing.”

“Good,” he said offering me his arm. “Shall we?”

“Why, thank you, kind sir,” I said, clumsily curtseying before taking his arm.

Back in the main room, voices and laughter boomed. Billy met us again and introduced us to everyone. Jeison ushered Finn over to a group of men, offering him some kind of alcohol. It was the first time he’d ever had some, so I urged him to go.

Billy stood next to me. “Like I said before, you and your family can stay here as long as you like.”

“Thank you,” I said, nodding with tears in my eyes.

Maybe this was a place my family could settle down for a while. A sanctuary to rest in until it was time to move on.

Inside, my heart twisted, knowing I’d eventually have to leave. When? I didn’t know. But my presence put everyone’s lives at risk, and this knowledge would weigh heavy on my shoulders. Yes, I had the gift, which had quickly turned into a curse, but how long would it last? I didn’t have an unlimited supply of serum. And what would happen when it ran out?

The future was unclear, but for now we were exactly where we needed to be. My family was back together and they looked happy. But most of all, they were free.

Finn glanced up at me with a cup of brew in his hand and a broad smile on his beautiful face. Home was where the heart was. And at this very moment, this was it.
