“Is that what I think it is?” I asked.
“The page I tore from Il Evanidus. I retrieved it from Montefuego’s roof.” He held it out to me.
I reached out and took it. If I was ever going to discover what Phillipe meant, I’d need this. “Why are you giving this to me? Didn’t your agency task you to retrieve it for them?”
“They did. Consider it a token of faith. In this crazy world we’re a part of, it’s nice to know there’s one person you can trust. Maybe someday, you’ll learn to trust me.”
“But why do you trust me?”
He unhooked his seatbelt, came over to me, and gave me a kiss that didn’t linger long enough. “Because I think I’m really falling for you.”
Both our cell phones buzzed.
I checked the readout on mine.
Code Red.
“You too?” he asked, nodding at my phone.
“Yep.” I sighed.
I steered the chopper in the direction of the nearest landing strip. The city’s lights twinkled like thousands of stars putting on a dazzling display just for Alexei and me.
A difficult path lay ahead. All I could think about was Marco and the hole in my heart. But somehow, I’d find the strength to handle anything this world, or any other, had to dish out.
After all, my name is Dagger. Agent Beaumont, if you’re evil.
