Chapter Nineteen
A Message from the Gods
Tipi hugged Phoebe as he crouched down in a dip among a clump of trees and bushes. He had run as fast as he could, and now he couldn’t even see the road anymore. He was out of breath, panting noisily, and staring out of the bushes that hid him. The bright starlight revealed nothing. He looked down at Phoebe in his arms. She still seemed to be sleeping, her head resting on his shoulder. She was as light as a feather, so tiny, and yet, so beautiful. He looked into her face, watching her sleep and feeling the slight movement in her body as she breathed. He felt that he could sit like this forever.
Slowly he began to relax, to get his breath back. And then it came over him. It was like a wave of harsh reality that washed over him, filling his mind with doubt and confusion.
What have you done? Why did you do that? Are you stupid or something? You were safe in the truck, on your way to Hilbrok, and now look at you. Lost in the middle of the countryside with no food, nowhere to sleep and no one to help you.
