Page 20 of Alpha's Truth

She wiped his hair off his forehead. He was going to hate it when she went to get help to bring him back to his bed.

“Guess you needed the sleep after all, tough guy.”

  ****

“Oh hell.” Beaux shook his head staring at Lucian. “Am I dead? Did I actually succumb to those fuckers’ bullet while my mate tried to heal me?”

Lucian leaned against the same set of trees he’d been standing near the last time Beaux saw him in the otherworld.

“You’re not dead.” Lucian crossed his arms over his chest. “Although if I’d known you were going to get your ass shot by those idiots, I wouldn’t have signaled you.”

  “Signaled me?”

Beaux got in Lucian’s face. He wasn’t a child anymore and he didn’t respect the other wolf in the least.

“I am not interested in hearing from you, Lucian. Not ever. I didn’t like talking to you when you were alive. And, in case I’m not clear about it, I’ve no interest whatsoever in talking to you now. Stay dead Lucian. Whatever you have to say, save it.”

“You think I want to talk to you? You’re the only one tuned in enough to listen to you.” Lucian threw his hands in the air. “If the others knew I did this, I’d be in serious trouble.”

“I smelled fire, which distracted me, and I got shot. Why am I not surprised this is all your fault? Bad enough you screwed things up when you were living. Now that you’re dead, I have to put up with you nearly getting me killed.”

“All right, enough of this. I have to tell someone, and it’s going to be you.” Lucian poked him in the shoulder. “And, by the way, considering you were mated once to a lovely woman and now you’re True Mated to the Healer Prime, not to mention you now have you own pack, whatever way I screwed up your life was clearly not lasting.”

“Get to the point.” The male had a point, and Beaux didn’t exactly want to give Lucian too much credit for having power over his life.

“I know Alexei has come out and announced he’s Alpha Prime. I’m here to tell you not to believe him.”

It took Beaux a minute to process what he said.

  “Excuse me?”

“Don’t believe him. He may have had some out-of-body experience making him think he’s Alpha Prime. But he’s not the only choice. There is always a multitude of options for Alpha Prime. He’ll be a disaster. Pick someone else.”

“Because you were such a gem?”

  Lucian had some nerve.

  “Listen, whatever my promises were….”

“You were nasty. You played favorites. You arranged for young wolves to do your dirty work. And you went and got yourself killed, leaving no successor to take over. The only thing I care about is taking care of my Mate and my Pack. You can kiss my ass with this bullshit. Don’t ever signal me again. Stay dead, Lucian. We’re not interested.”

  ****

Beaux jerked up in the bed, and Lake touched his forehead gently. At least he’d cooled down. She had no idea what had suddenly made him so hot.

  “Sweetheart, are you okay?”

He rubbed his face, and she smoothed the side of cheek with her hand. Beaux had caused her tremendous worry. The fact he had finally awakened meant she could breathe again. If only he would speak.

“Beaux, answer me. Can you speak?”

He kissed he hand. “I’ll be fine. I need the phone.”

“For what?” He wasn’t making any sense.

“I have to call Alexei. I need to give him my support, and I need to do it right now.”

  Chapter Eighteen

“You’re sure you want to do this?”

Beaux listened to Cyrus’ voice over the phone. He stood in his living room, staring out the window at the rain falling down over the horizon. Lake moved around upstairs. She’d awakened, and he wished he could have stayed in bed to hold her while she greeted the day.

It was his favorite part of the day. Well, maybe coupled with holding her when they went to sleep. Or kissing her in the kitchen. Or….

  “Beaux?”

He focused back in on his brother-in-law.

  “I’m sure.”

“Blood-oathing yourself to Alexei is a big step for you.”

Beaux tapped the window outside, watching the rain dance on the pane.

“Not really. If Lucian doesn’t want him, he’s the perfect choice. You blood-oathed him, which makes me loyal to you and to him. I’m already bound to your sorry ass through family.”

“Let’s say you really did see Lucian….”

Beaux interrupted him. “I’m not going over this again with you. I saw him. Some things are true whether we want them to be or not. I’d rather not have to communicate with the dead, only seeing as it keeps happening, I’d really prefer if you all didn’t act like I was crazy each time it happened.”

Cyrus sighed. “Who am I to argue with you? My sister is the Healer Prime, and you are her Mate. Why shouldn’t you be talking to our deceased ancestors?”

“He’s here. I felt it the second he stepped on my land.”

His brother-in-law audibly sighed. “I’ve been getting signaled the same way recently, too. Things are changing. And I feel like there is war coming.”

That’s because there would be a war. The Healer Prime hadn’t been called from the moon because there was no need for her. Beaux had to protect her, and doing so meant picking a side. Lucian hated Alexei? Seemed like a great endorsement for the other man. Plus, Alexei had helped Lake when she’d transformed and tried to warn Beaux, in his own odd way, about what would happen.

  “I’ve got to go.”

‘”Take care of my sister,” Cyrus instructed him.

“Take care of your baby. Lake can feel the birth coming. Soon.” That night, if his Mate proved correct—and she always did on these matters. The last few weeks had been a constant demonstration of Lake’s powers. She never ceased to amaze him.

  “Thanks.”

Beaux disconnected the phone and turned to regard Lake. “All well?”

  “I can feel Alexei.”

He nodded. If he could feel Alexei’s presence, his sensitive mate would certainly know, too.

  “Yep.”

“You’re sure?” She leaned against the wall.

“The only thing I’m sure about is you. This seems like a good idea. I have to trust my gut.”

He hadn’t wanted to ever get involved in werewolf politics. Except this was the world they lived in. To keep his Mate and his pack safe, he’d do whatever he had to.

“All right, well, before he dominates each second of the next two days, let’s go give thanks.”

“Really?” He walked toward her extending his hand. “You want to thank the moon.”

“I have a lot to be grateful for. Seems like a good idea. And I think we should bring the rescued children. They’ll like the ceremony of it. Giving thanks with the Alpha will make them feel more like pack.”

  “Lake….”

He didn’t have the words to tell her what she meant to him. There weren’t phrases to adequately express how he had been so sure they would get to this point, and that he had been absolutely convinced all hope was lost until she’d stepped back into his life like a miracle he’d never thought to see.

Beaux could never tell her how she’d rocked his world off its axis and left him in a different, more balanced place.

He let his voice trail off. Maybe she’d understand.

She rubbed her fingers over his knuckles. “I know.”

Of course she did. She was Lake. His, forever. His True Mate. Gifted by the Moon. For all eternity.

  “Please.”

A voice called out from the woods. Beaux rose, sniffing the air. He didn’t know who it was personally. His senses told him coming toward him was a pregnant female wolf.

“Please, is the Healer Prime here? We need help.”

  And so it had begun.

Lake nodded toward him. “Let’s do this thing.”
