The fallout from the Diamond Necklace Affair, one of the greatest confidence games in history, further blackened the already shaky reputation of Marie-Antoinette, and the French monarchy never fully recovered from the scandal. The film The Affair of the Necklace (2001) takes a few liberties with history and paints far too flattering a picture of both Jeanne de La Motte, the adventuress at the center of the plot to steal the diamonds, and the gullible Cardinal de Rohan, but is an entertaining and reasonably accurate portrayal of the swindle and its leading characters, for those who wish to learn more.
