Jason arrived in Montuga from Geneva on the following day. After greeting his wife, the king and Ruan, Jason went to Philippe’s quarters. He frowned as he discovered that most of Philippe’s possessions, including his beloved ivory chess set, had been removed.
Renate entered the chamber.
‘I meant to tell you, the Marquis…..’
‘I know. I saw smoke rising from the chimney of the Marquis’s chateau near Bella Vista on my way here. One of the guards filled me in as we rode past the chateau.’ Jason sat on the bed. ‘Still I suppose I hoped he would stay on in the palace.’
Renate sat on the bed next to him and took his hand.
‘I know how you feel. He has only been gone a day, but we all miss him. However, he is where he belongs. With his father.’ She managed a smile. ‘And I hope, before long, I will be able to provide you with a son of your own.’ She rose and gently tugged at him. Without a word, Jason rose to take up his wife’s invitation.
